Precision Meets Elegance: A New Era for a Celebrated Calibre
The Evolution of a Chronometric Champion: Calibre 978 Reimagined
Jaeger-LeCoultre reintroduces its significant Calibre 978 tourbillon movement with the new Master Grande Tradition Tourbillon Jumping Date. While the foundational Calibre 978 is well-known, this iteration boasts a restructured architectural design. The watch features a partially openworked dial, prominently displaying the tourbillon, the unique jumping date mechanism, and a 24-hour indicator. This 100-piece limited edition, presented in a luxurious 42mm pink gold case, pays tribute to the esteemed calibre through its refined finishing.
A Legacy of Precision: The Acclaimed Calibre 978
Building on a history of tourbillon production since 1946, the Calibre 978 first launched in 2006 and achieved recognition by winning the inaugural modern chronometry competition. This demanding 45-day trial, held in Le Locle in 2009, rigorously assessed its precision, shock resistance, and magnetic field immunity. Over time, the ultra-light tourbillon has been enhanced, now weighing under 0.5 grams and comprising 77 components, visibly rotating within a prominent aperture at 6 o'clock.
The Ingenious Jumping Date Mechanism
Beyond its one-minute tourbillon, the Calibre 978 is celebrated for its intuitive and visually captivating jumping date display. Gold printed numerals adorn the dial's edge, with the 15th and 16th positioned on either side of the tourbillon, nearly 90 degrees apart. A long gold pointer hand, tipped with a red JL anchor, indicates the date. This playful jumping date mechanism, unlike conventional pointer-date displays, executes a smooth leap from the 15th to the 16th at midnight each month, gracefully clearing the tourbillon.
Versatile Timekeeping: The 24-Hour Day/Night Indicator
The 24-hour disc located at the 12 o'clock position offers a practical and adaptable function, indicating day and night when synchronized with the main time display. This feature can be adjusted independently of the primary hour and minute hands, enabling it to function as a secondary time zone indicator, adding to the watch's utility.
Artistry in Detail: The Visually Striking Dial
The pink gold dial is exquisitely adorned with a barleycorn pattern and coated with layers of deep-blue translucent enamel. Reflecting the tourbillon's aperture, the dial incorporates several openworked sections that emphasize distinct elements. The 24-hour disc at noon features an openworked, sandblasted interior, and, similar to the tourbillon, is secured by a polished white gold bridge with a rounded berçage profile. A second cutaway at 9 o'clock reveals the calendar driver mechanism, also sandblasted, allowing for observation of its swift operation. Another aperture at 2 o'clock showcases the structural screws that hold a wheel staff.
Illuminating Elements: Hands and Markers
The applied pink gold hour markers, complemented by the gold dauphine hour and minute hands, are meticulously polished to catch and reflect light. A small red arrow on the 24-hour sub-dial matches the red tip of the pointer date hand, ensuring cohesive design and clear readability.
Masterful Craftsmanship: Elevating Movement Finishing
The movement's finishing and architecture have undergone significant improvements. The calibre features ten distinct decorative techniques, including perlage, sandblasting, Côtes de Genève, sunray brushing, and diamond polishing. Over 30 components are decorated by hand, with 48 hand-bevelled angles. A 22k pink gold rotor, with a substantial cutaway, provides an unobstructed view of the tourbillon through the sapphire caseback. This automatic movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour, offering a power reserve of 45 hours.
Elegant Encasement: Design and Availability
The movement is housed within a Grande Tradition-style pink gold case, measuring 42mm in diameter and 12.5mm in thickness, featuring a blend of polished, brushed, and microblasted surfaces. The timepiece is paired with a classic black alligator strap and a pink gold folding buckle. This model is a limited edition of 100 pieces, with pricing details to be confirmed.
