O'Neill's interim appointment at Ewood Park in February, when Blackburn Rovers were perilously close to the bottom of the Championship table, presented a significant challenge. Despite the pressure, he guided the team to safety, securing their second-tier status. Concurrently, he led the Northern Ireland squad against Italy in a crucial World Cup play-off, which unfortunately ended in a 2-0 defeat in Bergamo.
