Netflix Plans Live-Action Adaptation of Persona Series

Instructions

A new live-action television adaptation of the Atlus RPG series Persona is reportedly in the works at Netflix. This venture, spearheaded by 21 Laps, the production company behind 'Stranger Things,' and Story Kitchen, known for its expertise in translating video games to film (such as 'Sonic The Hedgehog,' 'Tomb Raider,' and 'It Takes Two'), signals a significant expansion for the beloved franchise.

Details Emerge on Persona Live-Action Project

According to a report from Variety, the creative reins will be held by writer and showrunner Christopher Monfette, whose prior work includes the forthcoming Marvel series 'VisionQuest' and 'Star Trek: Picard.' Joining a team of seven executive producers is Toru Nakahara from Sega, who has previously overseen the 'Sonic' film trilogy. This move comes as a slight surprise, given the extensive success of the Persona franchise, particularly 'Persona 5'. The core game, encompassing 'Persona 5' and 'Persona 5 Royal,' had sold over 10 million copies by August 2025, spanning three console generations since its 2016 debut. Its popularity has also led to five spin-off titles and remakes of earlier entries like 'Persona 3' and 'Persona 4'. While animated series for 'Persona 5' and 'Persona 4' have existed since 2018 and 2011 respectively, along with a 'Persona 3' anime miniseries, this marks the first foray into live-action. The broader Shin Megami Tensei universe, from which Persona originates, itself began as a novel trilogy, highlighting a rich history of cross-media adaptations.

While the prospect of a live-action Persona series is exciting for fans, concerns linger regarding the overwhelmingly American production teams. The cultural nuances and distinct Japanese setting of the games are integral to their appeal. Adapting a series so deeply rooted in anime requires careful consideration to maintain its authentic tone and atmosphere. The recent announcement of 'Persona 6' at the Xbox Games Showcase, albeit without gameplay footage or a release window, provides another reason for fans to anticipate the future of the franchise.
